Small business and cyber criminals.

A San Diego scientist, Stefan Savage of UCSD, is conducting a study of cyber crime threats and the broad tactics of cyber criminals. The National Science Foundation has awarded $10 million to the University of California San Diego in order to conduct this important study.

The idea is that you can disrupt cyber crimes by disrupting the basic strategies of criminals on the internet. These criminals often target small businesses, who deal with many suppliers and creditors, and who might not have the resources to protect themselves to the extent that larger corporations do.

Here’s an extensive and very interesting article detailing Stefan Savage’s efforts.

Two quick tips:

1) Make sure you have the latest anti-virus software updates installed and working.

2) Make sure your employees aren’t browsing sketchy websites that might pose a cyber threat to your business.
