Like other digital technology, digital printing has greatly advanced in recent years. Today’s high volume laser or inkjet printers can now produce very high quality full color or black and white prints at a fraction of the cost of traditional offset printing.
Unlike offset printing, digital prints can be produced in moments from nearly any type of digital file. Separately produced plates, special mixes and multiple applications of ink, press prep and clean-up are not required. These steps add to the time and cost of offset printing.
Digital printing has additional benefits:
–It allows “on demand” printing. New copies of a book, print or other document are not produced until an order has been received.
–It allows variable data printing. Elements such as text, graphics and images can be changed from one printed piece to the next. This is particularly useful for creating personalized direct mail pieces.
–It is more environmentally friendly. Digital printing produces less paper waste and doesn’t require chemicals that are used in traditional printing processes.
